Standing with Nonprofits: A Call for Compassion and Advocacy

At Mollard Consulting, our core values begin with belief – a belief in our ability to create meaningful impact:

  • On our clients
  • On the communities and people served
  • On the nonprofit sector
  • On each other

Our team is driven by compassion for the challenges our clients and their clientele face every day, but especially in this moment.

Nonprofits operate on thin margins. For years, they have been managing increasing levels of demand despite being chronically under-resourced. There is never enough — of anything — and yet there is always more need. It’s exhausting, but nonprofit leaders never give up.

This week, though, was different. As Nonprofit Quarterly reports, the funding freeze could decimate nonprofits of all sizes and sectors. Many nonprofits rely heavily on government funding to operate. In fact, government funding accounts for roughly one-third of nonprofit revenue. In Central Ohio alone, millions of dollars are at risk. Losing that much financial support makes a difficult job impossible.

We stand shoulder to shoulder with nonprofit organizations central to American society and the health and well-being of people and communities.

We believe in feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, caring for the vulnerable, educating the young, protecting the environment, celebrating culture, helping those in need, and treating others as we would want to be treated.

We believe in humanity and reflect on the words from Maya Angelou’s poem, Human Family –

“…in minor ways we differ,
in major we’re the same.
I note the obvious differences
between each sort and type,
but we are more alike, my friends,
than we are unalike.”

The funding freeze is not an issue of blue versus red or progressive versus conservative. It is an issue of who we are as a nation. We believe in the government’s role in upholding fundamental values and human rights through policies and funding. We also believe in the impact that the public, private, and nonprofit sectors can have when we come together toward a common goal.

The common goal right now should be predictable, stable, and sustainable funding for critical nonprofit programs and operations.

According to reports, a judge has blocked the freeze, but other reports state that while the memo was rescinded, the funding freeze was not. The situation is dynamic, creating waves of confusion and uncertainty. If not addressed, the changes in funding will cause harm to nonprofits and those they serve.

For all those who volunteer, donate, serve, and/or work in nonprofits, we encourage you to become advocates for the missions you care most about. BoardSource has an excellent resource called Stand for Your Mission to help you build your advocacy knowledge and capacity.

Now is the time to advocate, donate, volunteer and champion the sector and its leaders.

Together, we can stand for compassion.
