This year, members of our team gathered to attend the MLK Day Open House hosted by the King Arts Complex at the Ohio History Center. The vibrant event brought the entire history center to life and created space for learning, connection, and reflection.
The experience reminded us that community building happens in many forms. As a team that works remotely most of the time, getting to spend this time of reflection and remembrance in person was incredibly meaningful. The event honored Dr. King’s legacy in a way that felt very present to us and the work we do every day.
After some time spent exploring and enjoying the huge array of performances, displays, and activities, we found a quiet corner to complete a reflection activity and read Dr. King’s Letter from Birmingham Jail together. One line stood out to all of us: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” This statement is both simple and demanding. It reminds us that justice is collective. It requires attention, courage, and action from all of us, especially those working alongside communities that often go under-resourced or unheard.
At Mollard Consulting, our mission is to build the capacity of nonprofit organizations and the individuals who serve them. Our vision is thriving communities and families through highly effective nonprofits. Our work is rooted in the belief that nonprofits are critical to advancing equity, opportunity, and care in our communities. When nonprofits are strong, their voices are stronger. When their leadership is supported, they are better positioned to lead with purpose — so critically important in the difficult times we are all facing today.
Reading Dr. King’s letter reminded us that systems do not change on their own. They change when people and organizations are equipped to challenge injustice and serve with intention.
Our reflection led us to think differently about responsibility. It is not just about the work we do, but how we do it. It is about listening closely, building trust, and ensuring nonprofits have the resources they need. Community is built when organizations are connected, when leaders are supported, and when shared values guide decision-making at every level.
Honoring Dr. King’s legacy is not about a single day. It is about carrying his call for justice into our work year-round. For us, this means continuing to partner with nonprofits, strengthening their capacity and amplifying their impact. When nonprofits thrive, communities are stronger, and justice has space to move forward.
As we reflect on this day, we invite you to share how you honored Dr. King’s legacy and what his message means to you this year. Whether through service, learning, conversation, or quiet reflection, each act of community-building matters.
